Youth Consultation
Peterborough Youth Service
2003 - 2004 Report
Conclusion
Over the last year, the Young People’s Office has worked through local projects
which have included being involved with the consultation over a £250 million
extension to the Edith Cavell Hospital, the PYPIN project, which has required
many hours of young people's time, to our national involvement with initiatives
like "Y Vote, Y Not?", working in partnership with the National Youth Agency,
and the Electoral Commission. We've achieved this through communicating with
each other, developing useful partnerships where we could exchange ideas and
opinions, and using the Young People’s Office form of consultation and team work
as a key tool towards reaching agreements and making decisions. We've learnt
overall that young people have valuable views and opinions and that success can
come out of dedication and a belief in yourself. Many young people who have
participated in the Young People’s Office activities develop their self esteem
and confidence to question and challenge things around them and also to raise
their own awareness of how to use resources effectively and to speak up in group
situations.
Over the coming year, we want to look for new partners and partnerships between
us and other agencies or organisations. We want to encourage young people to use
the Young People’s Office as a resource, because without them there would be no
reason for the office to exist at all - therefore the more young people that
know about Youth Consultation the better. In the future, we want to take forward
the knowledge and skills that we've learnt and apply them to future projects,
continuing the learning process. The Young People’s Office is an excellent
initiative that has proven to be both positive and successful in the personal
and educational development of young people and we want to continue growing and
reaching out to more people and organisations. We'd like to encourage other
cities to start up similar projects to encourage the growth and development of
young people.
