Peterborough Youth Service
2003 - 2004 Report
How’ve we achieved this?
Project development - The Young People’s Office is a platform for the Active
Involvement of young people in decision making. Over the next few years we hope
to improve the quality of the partnerships that are made from the Young People’s
Office; we hope to inspire service providers, locally, regionally and nationally
to take up a similar challenge. We want more young people's views to be heard
and listened to across the city. Through the Young People’s Office the skills
and development of various young people has been enhanced and evolved by
developing working relationships between young people and adults.
The types of project work the young people have been involved in has expanded
towards the peer education model, whereby they have been given the opportunity
to share the potential for their own personal and political development. Over
the last year, time and development reports have been introduced, with personal
evaluation of learning experiences recorded with photographs. The young people
are encouraged to write about their experiences here at the Young People’s
Office and record their findings of any event. This can be done collectively or
as an individual, through meeting and talking about the young peoples’ thoughts
directly, or allowing them to write their experiences up on the computer for
contribution towards the YCP web site. The Young People’s Office behavioural
policy works towards challenging any racial discrimination or prejudice, and the
mixing of different ethnic cultures and diversities within the Young People’s
Office and the Youth Service promotes equality amongst the young people.
The use of ICT, and an informed (active involvement) Youth Worker within the
office helps us to combat barriers for young people when it comes to recording
information on the computers or using the equipment. The contribution made by
the Youth Service to the Electoral Commission and other Government departments
designed to support young people in democracy has been beneficial in terms of
the "Young Persons agenda for democracy - One year on". We hope to continue our
partnership with this project as it has been useful for gaining skills in terms
of self confidence and placing an importance on the views of young people.
We gained a connection with the Greater Peterborough Partnership, a local
strategic partnership which aims to improve Peterborough over the next twenty
years, with a personal strategy of including young people directly to gain an
outlook from that age range. Through maintaining a relationship with the Greater
Peterborough Partnership, some very beneficial work can come out of sharing and
exchanging ideas. Young people are the present, and can influence the future of
this City, and it is very important that they are given the opportunity to
express how things can be improved.
