Youth Consultation

Peterborough Youth Service

2003 - 2004 Report

Introduction

Past
Youth Consultation evolved from detached youth work with young people, which gradually grew from a meeting held once a month in a public venue to regular meetings in Peterborough Town Hall. From that, the vision of a Young People’s Office was born in Peterborough. There was a need for young people to have a place to meet and to get more heavily involved in project work on a more regular basis. The opening of the Young People’s Office in the Town Hall was in late 2002.

Present
Over the last year we've moved from the Town Hall to Bayard Place, which has been both successful and beneficial for the young people, because it has resulted in improved access and a more independent setting. At the moment, the development of the Young People’s Office is centered upon working on the Peterborough Young People’s Information Network (PYPIN) and developing the citywide active involvement teams.

Future
One of our aims is to encourage other cities to run a similar program by incorporating a Young People’s Office into their own Youth Services. Gradually, the Young People’s Office is becoming better known and we are making an imprint on certain sectors of the Government and other organisations. We’ve come a long way from where we once were, and we don’t think that our ambition is too far fetched. We want to carry on working with different people, and discovering new boundaries for what we can do. It’s really interesting to see where different projects and events can take the Young People’s Office and what we can learn from what we get involved in.
