Progress Report
It seems that Youth Consultation is going in the right direction. We have come a
long way this year and have raised our profile. Our hard work has paid off and
people are taking a keen interest in what it is that we do. We are getting more
work handed to us and more young people involved every year. It is a great step
forward for Peterborough as it shows that we are genuinely interested in young
people’s views and discussions.
This year, we have been in the local papers many times, and on the radio. It
seems that Youth Consultation really works. People seem to think that young
people would never give their views on such things as politics and community
issues – a main reason for this is that young people don’t expect their views to
be taken seriously.
As Youth Consultation works as part of the Youth Service we work in partnership
with adults; young people respect adults’ points of view and adults respect
young people. It is a fantastic way of working and gives young people a chance
of working in an adult environment. Also having a young person from Youth
Consultation involved has obviously been highly valued at many Peterborough
meetings we have attended. Sometimes it feels tokenistic, but at other times our
word is very valuable.
We feel Youth Consultation could grow to become a great way of communicating
with all young people, with more young people becoming interested in the work we
do and more organisations wanting to get involved. Youth consultation will start
to see a lot more partnership work and networking over the next year due to the
launch of the PYPIN project. This project was very time consuming, but has been
a valuable piece of work.
