Youth Consultation
Peterborough Youth Service
2003 - 2004 Report
What have we learned?
What went well - what didn’t?
Working in the Young People’s Office, rarely do things go terribly wrong.
Although we have missed deadlines for projects and come to a temporary stand
still on some projects, we always seem to finish what we start and end up with a
great report in the end. We think one of the best things for Youth Consultation
this year has been the Birmingham Conference where young people from Youth
Consultation went to a conference on community development and reported on it as
roving reporters. It was an excellent opportunity and let us show other
organisations what we do.
We were also given a lot of attention when we went to Downing Street to deliver
a report to PM Tony Blair. It gave young people the chance to talk on the radio
and we got our faces in the paper. It showed that young people can get involved
in politics even though it is seems to be an adult world.
The PYPIN work started off quite slowly but has become a great piece of work so
far. It has shown us as young people that we are capable of doing a lot of
things that we would usually leave to others. It has also built Youth
Consultation up as a team. Other projects that are going well are “Give us your
time”, with which the police seemed quite pleased. Also, the Peterborough
Learners’ Forum, which after a long hard struggle has now been given an identity
and looks good.
To make our work even more successful we need to put a bit more order into the
work we do. We also need to stop talking so much and start acting on our
thoughts more quickly - we sometimes have meetings and realise by the end of
them that we have talked about the things we said we were going to do last
month!
