Youth Consultation
Peterborough Youth Service
2003 - 2004 Report
Young people’s involvement?
Local Involvement
Locally over the last year Youth Consultation has been involved in several major
projects. One that was quite significant was the Peterborough Learners’ Forum
which was created in partnership with Peterborough’s Learning Partnership. It
was a huge project which involved young people from the office peer researching
into education. This involved us going out onto the streets of Peterborough and
asking four hundred young people to answer a questionnaire on their experiences
of education.
We have developed a web site for Cambridgeshire Constabulary on crime that
affects young people. This site is called “give us your time” and helps young
people in and around Peterborough to be aware of the ways young people can be
sucked into crime.
Young people from the office have also been involved in the NHS Health
Investment Plan. We developed a scrap book on how young people would like to see
the new hospital being built in Peterborough. We then gave a presentation in one
of the meetings to show what we had found out.
UKYP is a youth parliament. Young people can put themselves forward to be
elected to UKYP as long as they have some relevant ideas that they want to talk
about. Last year we held an election for Peterborough’s member of youth
parliament. It was a great success and many people turned out to vote. Mohammed
Jangher, who was elected, has been involved with going to the national meetings
and representing Peterborough in the Youth Parliament.
With Connexions we have been involved in going to interviews and sitting on the
young persons’ panel. We have been involved in asking questions, writing
summaries of each person interviewed and also choosing the candidate that we
feel is most suitable for the job.
Youth Consultation was involved in being a part of GPP which is the Greater
Peterborough Partnership. This is a group of people involved in developing the
city of Peterborough. Some of the issues that came out of the meeting were,
“should Peterborough have a university?” and “should Peterborough expand its
shopping area?” It was very interesting to see how all the people attending this
meeting, which included the bishop of Peterborough and Gillian Beasley the Chief
Executive of the council, reacted to our ideas and thoughts. They also gave us a
good feeling that our being at the meeting was not tokenistic and our views were
going to be taken into consideration.
Also, Youth Consultation has been working on, and is still working on, the PYPIN
project (Peterborough’s Young People’s Information Network). This is a network
of computers in youth clubs, schools and libraries which will be a centre
database for young people to get information quickly and efficiently. It has
several things that it focuses on such as health, entertainment and housing.
